FOOTBALL: Glacier looks to limit hobbled CMR

Glacier football has been walking a tight rope the last five weeks, winning game after game in nail-biting fashion, sometimes with offensive explosion and others with defensive masterpieces.
The Wolfpack continued that trend last weekend, winning a 63-62 overtime contest with Missoula Sentinel under the lights at Washington-Grizzly Stadium on the campus of the University of Montana. It was the largest offensive output of the season and the third comeback victory in four games, two of those facing at least 18-point deficits.
“In five games played, three of them have been as memorable and with as many crazy plays that you can imagine,” Glacier coach Grady Bennett said. “It’s hard to believe that we could have three games like that in one season. Half a season. It’s been phenomenal.
“What’s amazing about this group of players is that they just keep finding ways to win. Whatever it is, they keep figuring out a way. They never quit. They never stop believing they’re going to get it done.”
The Wolfpack is off to a 6-0 start for only the second time in 10 seasons as a program and sit atop Class AA with last season’s state title runner-up Billings Senior. Yet, unlike the undefeated run in 2014, there have been plenty of close calls this season, and not always on the road.
Glacier will play the last four games of the regular season in Kalispell, where it hasn’t played at its best this year, winning a close, low-scoring game with Helena Capital and coming out flat against Great Falls Highs on homecoming before a late scoring outburst secured a victory.
“We’ve struggled a little bit to come out with the same energy and enthusiasm,” Bennett said.
“We really want to play well at home and we don’t feel like we have yet. I think the guys are really excited about that. Knowing that we have the next four at Legends Stadium is a great advantage if we use it.”
After giving up 62 points in a win, Glacier is looking to get back on track against a team that has given it as much troubles as nearly any team in the state.
“When we looked at the film, 85 percent of the plays defensively were really, really solid,” Bennett said. “Obviously the 15 percent is a problem.
“Sentinel threw everything at us, they scored on three trick plays. They made them work. That doesn’t always happen.
“It’s something we have to be more aware of ... At times you try to do too much, instead of trusting your teammates that they’re going to do their thing. It’s just a matter of continuing to tighten up on those things. The good news is we’ve been able to win these games.”
Great Falls C.M. Russell has played the Wolfpack seven times in the last five years, Glacier only playing Bozeman more in that stretch. Four of those games have been decided by two scores or less and the Rustlers were the only team in 2014 to hold a second-half lead on the eventual-state champion Wolfpack.
This season the Rustlers have battled a series of injuries, resulting in a 2-4 start to the season that has them on the cusp of the playoff picture. Still, Glacier’s coaches know the pedigree and potential CMR brings to every game it plays.
“Every time I watch CMR, they’re still CMR,” Bennett said.
“They’re well coached, they always will be. They’re always going to do good things. We always treat them with great respect and prepare like crazy because if we don’t we’ll be in trouble ... We’re going to have to play well to beat them.”
The game is scheduled to start at 7 tonight at Legends Stadium and will be broadcast locally on 103.9 FM and streamed online at mtsport.tv.
