COEUR d’ALENE — Coeur d’Alene forward Gabe Nazemi scored a go-ahead goal on a deft pass from Austin Garitone, which was the difference in helping the Vikings beat the Post Falls Trojans 2-1 in the opening round of the 5A Region 1 tournament on Saturday at Coeur d’Alene High.

Garitone won a 50/50 ball on the right side of the midfield, gave a quick touch pass up the field that split two defenders. Nazemi then ripped a kick to the far left side.

Up next for the No. 2 seed Vikings (7-1-5) is a date with No. 1 seed Lake City (7-6-1) at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex in the championship game. On Thursday, in regular season action at Coeur d’Alene, the Timberwolves beat the Vikings, 2-1.

The Trojans finish 5-4-5.

“The second goal of the game was huge for us,” Coeur d’Alene Jeff Lake said. “They dominated in the first half, they had a lot of opportunities. We were lucky we had it 1-1 at half. We made a few adjustments in the second half. We dropped Austin back into the midfield. He gave a nice chance to Gabe. It’s surive and advance and we look forward.”

Lake gave credit to the Vikings’ defense for allowing just one goal, an early score in the ninth minute by Post Falls forward Diego Esquivel of the Trojans. Two minutes later, Garitone tied the game at 1, on an assist from Cameron Dance.

Coeur d’Alene goalkeeper Shawn McKeeken made eight saves.

“Our defense won it for us,” Lake said. “Jason Lukes, Dempsey Brewer in the backfield were great, so was Shawn.”

COEUR d’ALENE — Greyden Lee scored in the 79th minute on an assist from Cole Fawcett to send the top-seeded Timberwolves past the fourth-seeded Bengals in the opening round of the 5A Region 1 tournament at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex at Lake City High.

“We had our share of the possession in the match,” first-year Lake City coach Alan Rich said. “Both teams played hard until the end and Lewiston gave us a great fight right up until the final whistle. Regardless of the standings, we’re happy to get the win. We had our chances, but failed to capatalize. It was nice to put one in at the end.”

Moscow 2

Sandpoint 1 (SO)

SANDPOINT — With each team knowing the winner would claim the top seed at the district tournament and there could not be a tie, a lot was at stake when Sandpoint and Moscow tangled in a 4A Inland Empire League clash on Saturday Pine St. Field.

Trailing 1-0 late in the game, Mac Stultz was in the right place at the right time, punching in the equalizer in the 80th minute for the Bulldogs (9-3-4, 2-1-1 4A IEL), earning his team two extra 10 minute overtime periods.

Despite creating plenty of chances and peppering the Moscow goalie, neither team could score in overtime, setting up a rare regular season shootout to determine who would earn the No. 1 seed.

Each team went a perfect 5 for 5 in the first round, before the Moscow keeper guessed right and stopped the sixth Sandpoint shot, punching in the next PK to earn the 2-1 shootout win and claim the coveted right to host the 4A Region 1 championship game.

“It was a good lesson as they head into districts and hopefully state. Our previous lessons were end of the season lessons,” Sandpoint coach Adam Tajan said. “I’m glad, we didn’t want to get there (coin flip). I’m real pleased with how they battled back. We had them on the ropes several times.”

Both teams agreed before the game to settle things on the field, instead of opting for a coin flip, should the game end tied. Each team swept Lakeland by identical scores in league play, and tied both times head-to-head, necessitating the extra soccer.

No. 2 Sandpoint hosts No. 3 Lakeland on Monday, at 3:30 p.m. at Pine St. Field in a loser-out game, with the winner advancing to face No. 1 Moscow on Wednesday.
