COEUR d’ALENE — Havana Johnson recorded a hat trick and Caitlin Barber had three assists, leading the top seed Lake City Timberwolves past the fourth seed Post Falls Trojans 5-1 in the opening round of the 5A Region 1 tournament on Saturday at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex at Lake City High.

Payton Barber had a goal and assist for Lake City (10-3-2), which hosts Coeur d’Alene in the regional championship match on Tuesday at Lake City High.

“We definitely talked about wanting to start quick and did that,” Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. “We kind of got away from that and had a talk at halftime and were able to get back to it in the second half. Havana with a hat trick and the Barber kids having a solid second half really helped. Post Falls was working hard and wanted to stay in it. I thought if we came out with a stronger work ethic in the second half, we could get the job done, and that was the difference in the game.”

Rickie Colosimo scored in the 73rd minute for Post Falls, which finishes 2-11-2.

First half — 1, LC, 2:00, Havana Johnson (Caitlin Barber). 2, LC, 35, Johnson (Caitlin Barber). Second half — 3, LC, 41, Payton Barber (Caitlin Barber). 4, LC, 48, Johnson (Payton Barber). 5, LC, 61, Casey Holton (Chloe Teets). 6, PF, Rickie Colosimo (unassisted), 73:00.

Coeur d’Alene 1

COEUR d’ALENE — The Vikings took advantage of a miscue by the Bengals for the lone goal of the match in the 5A Region 1 tournament.

Coeur d’Alene’s Rachel Brendis had a throw-in pass that bounced off a Lewiston player’s knee and into the goal in the 25th minute for the only goal of the match.

“Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good,” Coeur d’Alene coach Andy Vredenburg said. “We had a bunch of chances to score and had three breakaways and the Lewiston goalkeeper stopped each one of them. They were throwing everything they could at us in the second half and we were able to fight them off. We were still a little tired from the Lake City match, but the girls dug deep and found a way to get the win.”

Ali Rollins had four saves for Coeur d’Alene.

Kaysha Bailey had nine saves for Lewiston, which finishes 9-4-3.

First half — 1, Cd’A, own goal, 25:00. Second half — none.

Moscow 1

MOSCOW — Riley Walkington netted a hat trick, and the Bulldogs scored early and often to romp past the Bears in 4A Inland Empire League finale for both schools, earning the top seed at regionals in the process.

Jezza Hutto added two goals and an assist, and the Bulldogs (5-5-5, 3-1 4A IEL) showed an ability to finish in the attacking third, something they hope to have moving forward in the games that really count.

“It was by far the most comprehensive game we’ve played,” Sandpoint coach Conor Baranski said. “We played more fluid in the attack, especially from the three or four players who have been there all season. We scored in the second minute and didn’t look back, it was impressive.”

No. 1 seed Sandpoint awaits the winner of Tuesday’s loser-out game between Moscow at Lakeland, with that match Thursday, at 3:30 p.m. at Pine St. Field in Sandpoint.
