Teen admits role in West Reserve burglary spree

A teen has admitted taking part in a burglary spree in the West Reserve Drive area earlier this year.

In Flathead District Court on Thursday, Skyler Alexander Smith, 18, pleaded guilty to two felony counts of burglary as part of a plea agreement in which two other felony counts of burglary were dropped.

According to court documents, Smith and Andrew Simpson Gilbert, 18, were spotted riding bicycles at 3:30 a.m. in the West Reserve Drive area on May 26, after previously being escorted home earlier that evening.

A deputy offered to give the young men a ride, and when they arrived at the home the pair consented to a search of the residence.

According to court records, inside the home was loot from four burglaries from the previous two weeks, including many tools and other shop items. Authorities with the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office said the amount of property recovered was so large that deputies had a difficult time determining exactly how many burglaries had been perpetrated.

On the stand Thursday, Smith admitted that he had taken part in at least two of the burglaries and had stolen items from a barn or a shop-type structure.

Flathead County Attorney Ed Corrigan said that while his office agreed to drop two of the charges, Smith might still be held accountable for losses incurred in the other burglaries.

“We might ask the court to hold you responsible for restitution,” Corrigan said.

Each count of burglary carries a possible maximum sentence of up to 20 years in Montana State Prison, though prosecutors have recommended that Smith receive a 10-year deferred sentence.

“You will be under watch for 10 years,” Flathead District Court Judge Amy Eddy said, explaining the proposed sentence.

She pointed out that she is not bound by the plea agreement and could impose a harsher sentence if she wishes.

Sentencing was set for Nov. 23.

Gilbert is set to go to trial in this case on Oct. 31.
