Girls XC takes 1st, boys 2nd at Whitefish Invite

The Whitefish girls cross country team took gold at home during Thursday’s Whitefish Invite at Whitefish Lake Golf Club.
The team finished with an average race time of 19:51.23, finishing ahead of Polson and Columbia Falls. Ella Greenberg took fourth with 19:25.51 and Braya Hobson finished just after her at 19:27.13 for fifth place. Josephine Vardell and Jessica Henson finished out the top 10 at ninth place with a time of 19:59.69, and 10th place with a time of 20:00.45, repestively and Jessica McCoy finished right behind her teammates in 12th place.
The boys team also had a strong showing at home, taking second in team scores behind Columbia Falls. The average race time for Whitefish was a 17:10.27, just behind Columbia Falls’ 16:50.77.
Whitefish had four runners finish in the top 10. Senior Ethan Potthoff took third overall with a time of 16:44.98. Sage Cornelius, 17:12.76; Bridger Gaertner, 17:12.99; and Josh Weller, 17:17.28; took sixth, seventh and eighth, and Eric Holdhusen took 12th.
Head coach Richard Menicke said nearly every runner raced season-best times at the meet.
The team will continue its season Saturday at Fairmont Hot Springs for the Western A Cross Country Classic for the divisional meet. The state meet is in Kalispell this year on Oct. 22 at Rebecca Farm.
