POST FALLS — In their previous matchup, the St. Maries boys soccer team controlled the possession of the match with Intermountain League champion Timberlake.

The only problem, they didn’t finish on goal scoring chances on that day.

Timberlake did.

Presented with the same challenge in Tuesday’s semifinal game of the 3A District 1-2 tournament, it was the Lumberjacks that finished it off.

Matt Masterson scored the game-winner in double overtime in the 96th minute for the third-seeded Lumberjacks in a 2-1 win against the second-seeded Tigers at Post Falls High.

“The boys have been playing really well,” St. Maries coach Chris Renaldo said. “We moved the ball really, really well and continued to press them on defense.”

In the second overtime, Masterson scored on a rebound of a Stephen Davenport shot for the win.

“Diego (Papetti) had a free kick and dropped it in front of the goal and Matt finished it off,” Renaldo said. “I wasn’t sure if Stephen would have scored, but Matt made sure it went in.”

St. Maries (6-7-4) will face top-seeded Bonners Ferry in the championship game on Tuesday at Lake City High starting at 3 p.m.

Bonners Ferry eliminated Orofino 3-0 in the other semifinal.

Cody Bentley scored in the 44th minute for Timberlake, which finishes 11-3-1.

“They’ve got a good team,” Renaldo said. “They bunkered in to start the second half and I knew they wanted to score quick, and they did. They’re a good program.”

First half — 1, SM, Tyler Martin (Steven Davenport), 25:00. Second half — 2, TL, Cody Bentley (unassisted), 44:00. Overtime — 3, SM, Matt Masterson (Davenport, Diego Papetti), 96:00.

POST FALLS — Keelie Lawler stopped four shots for the top-seeded Tigers in a shutout victory over the Wildcats in a semifinal match in the 3A District 1-2 tournament at Post Falls High.

Defensively, we were able to hold them off and move the ball round in the backfield,” Timberlake coach Steve Michael said. “We had some struggles in the midfield tonight and that gave us some things to work on for Thursday.”

I’m very proud of how we connected and handled the moment.”
