COEUR d’ALENE — Showing pure hustle and heart, Coeur d’Alene High forward Austin Garitone scored the golden goal on a rebound in the seventh minute of the second overtime of the 5A Region 1 boys soccer title game, a 3-2 Vikings win over host and top-seeded Lake City on Wednesday at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.

The senior had an initial header that Timberwolves sophomore goalkeeper Chase Norris blocked with a fantastic diving save, going full extension to his left to block the ball. But Garitone ran full speed and put away the rebound in sudden death from the right-hand side facing the net, tapping it in on the outside of his right foot from three yards away into the upper right side of the net. That sent Coeur d’Alene, the No. 2 seed, to its first state berth since coach Jeff Lake’s first season with the Vikings, back in 2010.

Garitone ran full speed toward his teammates, taking off his shirt in celebration with his mouth wide open after his 13th and most important goal so far, as the entire team mobbed him in joy.

“I came out and I saw the keeper come out and I knew that I could go top shelf,” Garitone said. “So I hammered it. When I saw him block that, I was thinking, ‘No way.’ That was just too good of a chance to not capitalize on that. I mean, we wanted it bad. In the second (overtime), we came out and knew we could win, if we could control the game and that’s what happened.”

Coeur d’Alene (8-1-5) will face the District 5-6 runner-up in its opener at state next Thursday at 9 a.m. at Post Falls High.

“It’s pretty nice,” Garitone said. “Now we can focus more on on ourselves and what we need to work on, instead of (facing) any more teams. To have a day off, get our legs back and hit it hard again.”

It was Coeur d’Alene’s first regional title since 2010, when the Vikings won their fourth straight regional crown.

“I think that was goal was quintessential Austin,” Lake said. “Chase Norris had a fantastic save on that header, he was fully laid out and Austin got it, it was a zero-angle shot and he put it in.”

Lake City (7-7-1), the two-time defending Region 1 champion, will hit the road on Saturday, in a state play-in game at 2 p.m. PDT at Payette against Timberline (11-5-2), the fifth-place team from Boise-area District 3.

“It goes to show you that soccer’s one of those games that you can basically dominate the overtime and still not come out on top,” first-year Timberwolves coach Alan Rich said. “I knew we’d have a target on our back. There’s no easy games in this league. Virtually every game between virtually every team is a one-goal game. So we knew it’d be a hard season, we knew Coeur d’Alene was going to bring their best, so we’ll have to get it done on the road.”

Lake City scored a game-tying goal in the 68th minute, thanks to a tap-in by forward Riley Glover on a wide-open net that made it 2-2. A ball went in between Vikings goalkeeper Shawn McKeeken’s legs and past him, and Glover took advantage. In the first half, Garitone kicked a ball off the left post, then later on he booted a ball off the crossbar.

In the second minute, Lake City’s Beau Chandler hit a left-footed strike from 20 meters away to his right, past a diving McKeeken, for a 1-0 Lake City lead.

Cd’A sophomore forward Gabe Nazemi hit a left-footed strike of his own to tie the game, on a corner kick from Justin Kofmehl. In the 48th minute, Kofmehl drilled an amazing goal on a free kick from nearly 30 meters out, putting a ball high over a leaping Norris.

“Certainly they made a defensive error on one of their goals,” Rich said. “But we certainly had more than our fair share (of scoring chances) that we didn’t finish.”

The teams split their two meetings in 5A Inland Empire League play.

“I feel we were unlucky in the first half,” Lake said. “We hit the inside of the (left post) and it went back out. At some point, you’re wondering, ‘Is it our day?’ We pretty much dominated the second half. We dominated it and one mental slip-up cost us that goal. We left a guy unmarked and that was a real tough thing for us. Hats off to them, and to Alan for his first season. They’re still alive. I feel like we created a lot of quality chances.”

First half — 1, LC, Beau Chandler (Travis Swallow), 2:00. 2, Cd’A, Gabe Nazemi (Justin Kofmehl). Second half — 3, Kofmehl (Dakota Fisbeck), 48:00. 4, LC, Riley Glover (unassisted). First overtime — None. Second overtime — 5, Austin Garitone (unassisted), 97:00.

Shots on goal — LC 9, Cd’A 9.

Saves — LC, Chase Norris 6, Cd’A, Shawn McKeeken 7.
