Out of 36 Glacier High School students to receive Advanced Placement Scholar Awards, four were given the highest honor and each named a National Advanced Placement Scholar.

Teigan Avery, Ryker McIntyre, Kadin Shields and Kyersten Siebenaler, all 2016 graduates, received the national award for achieving an average score of at least 4 on all AP exams, and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams, according to the College Board, the nonprofit that manages the Advanced Placement program.

The students are currently attending the following colleges respectively, University of Montana, University of Notre Dame, University of Washington and University of Notre Dame.

These students follow in the footsteps of 2015 graduate David Schwarz, who was the school’s first National AP Scholar.

Students taking AP college-level courses had the option to sit for exams last May. Exams are scored on a 1 to 5 scale. Glacier currently offers 16 AP courses.

In May, 205 Glacier students took 255 Advanced Placement exams. This is a slight increase of the number of students taking tests compared to the 2015-16 school year, however, a small decrease in the number of exams administered.

Out of the 255 exams given, about 72 percent earned a score of three or higher. The national pass rate average was 60 percent.

Students who earn a score of 3 may earn college credit, which saves time and money, said Glacier counselor and AP coordinator Jerad Avery.

“My compliments to teachers who teach AP courses and to the students who are challenging themselves,” Avery said.
