Lonepine angler leads Mack Days

Anglers have turned in a total of 5,572 lake trout entries in the 2016 Mack Days fall fishing event sponsored by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes and sanctioned by Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks. Anglers turned in 580 lake trout on Friday, 557 on Saturday and 162 on a rough, windy, rainy and blistery Sunday.

The $10,000 tagged lake trout is still out there, along with two fish worth $5,000 and five $1,000-tagged trout. There are over 7,000 fish with tag values ranging from $100 to $500. Glenn Hoffman turned in his third $100 tagged lake trout on Saturday. Also turning in $100 tags were Danny Smith, Kenny Garrett, Brian Collart, David Lehman, Roger Schiff, Terry Krogstad. Richard Kreis and Terry Krogstad turned in $200 tags over the last week.

Mike Benson of Lonepine has taken first place in total fish with 475 caught so far. Terry Krogstad has dropped to second with 402 fish. Felix Gauci of Stevensville is in third place followed by Sam Cusker of Missoula in fourth place with 232 fish. Scott Bombard of Missoula is in fifth place with 226 fish. Larry Ashwell of Missoula is in sixth place with 195. Larry Karper of Florence is in seventh with 190 fish. Morgan Amdahl of Kalispell is in eighth with 151 fish. Richard Kreis of Huson is in ninth with 147 fish and Bob Stewart of Kalispell is in 10th with 145 fish.

Florence angler Larry Karper is in first in the 70-and-older category with 190 fish. Glenn Hoffman of Missoula is in second with 95. Leonard Lewis of Missoula is in third with 81 fish. Bob Christensen of Missoula is in fourth with 64 and Jerry Luderman of Kalispell is fifth with 20 fish.

Laurie Kreis of Huson has 68 fish to lead the ladies category. Brandy Hilde of Whitefish is in second with 58. Julie Vacca of Missoula is in third with 40. Gina Schiff of Whitefish is in fourth with 24, and Deb Amdahl of Kalispell and Donna McPearson of Silverdale, Wash., are tied with 20 fish each.

Tyler Varga continues to lead the 13- to 19-year-old category with 50 fish, and Dalton Kluesner of Frenchtown has one entry in the 12-and-under group.

Winning $200 and the first of the three heaviest bucket competitions was the team of Richard, Laurie Kreis and Jon Thornberg with a weight of 24.6 pounds. Roger Schiff and Jerry Luderman came in second with a weight of 19.6 pounds. In third place was Monte and Donna McPhearson with 19.15 pounds.

The second Bucket Day will be Saturday, Oct. 22 and the third day will be Sunday, Nov. 6.

Terry Krogstad leads the smallest fish competition with a lake trout measuring 176 mm. Tim Vacca and Randy Collins are tied for second with trout measuring 196mm. The two winners in the smallest lake trout category will win $250.

There is no large lake trout entry so far in the event. The largest has to be over 36 inches and over 24 pounds to qualify.

Entries continue to be taken until the last day of the event. There is no entry fee. The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes has a special $13 yearly combined fishing use permit for the south half of Flathead Lake available to anglers from any area.
