They play an attacking style on defense, and have shown they can run the football.
Whether that’s enough for the Post Falls Trojans to knock off the second-ranked Lewiston Bengals tonight, in perhaps the rain, the wet and the wind of Trojan Stadium, remains to be seen.
Lewiston (7-0, 1-0 5A Inland Empire League) is coming off an emotional 55-51 victory over Coeur d’Alene last week at Bengal Field. The Bengals passed for 304 yards and five touchdowns last week, but also gave up more than 300 yards on the ground to the Vikings.
Post Falls (6-1, 1-0), which has won five straight, is coming off a victory over Lake City in their league opener.
“Lewiston’s a great football team,” Post Falls interim coach Blaine Bennett said. “We’re going to have to do the best job we can this week to prepare our kids and be ready to go. It’s nice to play at home. We went to Lewiston last year, and they got us pretty good (42-14). (Lewiston coach) Shawn (Nilsson) does a great job down there and they’re going to be well-coached and it’s going to be a great challenge.”
Lake City (3-4, 0-1) at Coeur d’Alene (3-3, 0-1): As Coeur d’Alene coach Shawn Amos said after last week’s loss, the Vikings’ next two league games became even that much more important. Two of the four 5A IEL teams automatically qualify for the state playoffs, while the third-place team is in the mix for a wild-card playoff berth.
For Lake City, it’s first-year coach Bryce Erickson’s introduction to the intracity rivalry.
“Rivalries are great for football,” Erickson said. “They’re great for high school, they’re great for college. It’s an incredible rivalry and I’m well aware of it. They’re a great football team and they’ve got a great tradition there. I still believe in my heart that we’re a great football team and we’re going to give them everything we have. We’re excited for the challenge and our kids will be ready to play.”
Sandpoint (3-4, 0-0 4A Inland Empire League) at Lakeland (4-3, 1-0): The Hawks, which won at Moscow last week in their league opener, can wrap up the league title and a first-round bye in the state playoffs with a victory. Sandpoint can earn the top spot with a win tonight, as well as one vs. Moscow next week. Either way, both are likely to advance to the state playoffs, as two teams qualify. The No. 2 seed plays on the road in the first round.
Timberlake (1-6, 1-0 Intermountain League) at Priest River (2-3, 1-0): The winner gains the upper hand in the quest for the IML title and a first-round bye in the state 3A playoffs. The runner-up also advances to state, and hosts a first-round game. Last week, Timberlake beat Bonners Ferry and Priest River defeated Kellogg in IML openers.
Kootenai (3-3, 2-3 White Star League) at Deary (4-1, 3-0): The Warriors take to the road to face the second-place team in the league.
Timberline (0-7, 0-5 WSL) at Lakeside (3-3, 1-2): The Knights look for their third straight victory as they play host to the winless Spartans in Plummer.
