The Bonner County Daily Bee won a total of 18 awards in the Utah Idaho Spokane Associated Press Association’s annual news contest, including third place in the general excellence category.
Daily Bee staff won first-place honors for feature photo, Eric Plummer; general news photo, Eric Plummer; picture story/photo essay, Caroline Lobsinger; sports column, Eric Plummer; spot news photo, Keith Kinnaird; spot news story, Keith Kinnaird; and feature story, David Gunter. In addition, the staff received a number of second- and third-place awards in various categories.
Publisher Jim McKiernan praised the newspaper’s staff and congratulated them for the awards.
“I’m really proud of what our small staff does at this daily newspaper,” he said. “They genuinely care about the community and it shows in everything they write or shoot. I am confident the community feels lucky to have these folks telling their stories.”
Winning top honors in the general excellence division were The Salt Lake Tribune, The Lewiston Tribune in Lewiston, and the Moscow-Pullman Daily News in Moscow. Barbara Christiansen and of the Daily Herald in Provo, Utah, won the William H. Cowles III Memorial Award for public service reporting for her examination of suicide in Utah County, a project that the judges called comprehensive, powerful and informative.
Top investigative honors went to Nate Carlisle of the Salt Lake Tribune for an examination of a cement company with ties to a polygamous group.
Newspapers competed in three size divisions: for newspapers under 100,000 circulation; papers of 100,000 to 299,999 circulation; and papers over 300,000 circulation.
