COMMUNITY BRIEFS: Youth photography contest submissions due Oct. 21

Youth have a chance to show off their creativity and love of the outdoors by entering the 2016 Nature in Focus Youth Photography Contest on the Whitefish Trail.

Professional photographers and artists will judge entries in two age groups, ages 12 to 14 and 15 to 18, with three winners and three honorable mentions from each group. Photos must be taken on the Whitefish Trail and can include wildlife (birds, mammals, insects, spiders, reptiles and amphibians), landscapes, native plants, people using the trail system, or patterns in nature.

Winning photos will be published in the Whitefish Pilot, and winning photographers will receive cash prizes — First place, $100, second place $50 and third place, $25. Contest rules and registration information is available on www.whitefishlegacy.org.

The deadline to submit photos is 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21.


Ronan High hosts candidate forum Monday

A candidate forum will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct.17, in the Fine Arts Performance Center at Ronan Middle School.

Democrat and Republican candidates for local and state offices have been invited and will answer questions from the Ronan High School government class as well as questions from the audience.

The event is an opportunity for students in Jessica Johnson’s government class to study state and local government and issues and learn about each candidate.

The forum is organized by the Lake County Democrats and the Lake County Republican Women’s Club. Everyone is invited to attend to learn the candidates’ positions on important issues, and to give support to the high school students who are taking an active role in the election process.

Refreshments will be served.


Apple Festival at Polson church

Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Polson hosts its annual Apple Festival from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22.

Delicious homemade apple pies will be available for sale in 10-inch size for $10, and 6-inch size for $5, perfect for your Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner.

The event also features many vendors and a lunch with choice of sandwiches and slices of pies for dessert.


Salvation Army seeks applicants for Christmas

The Salvation Army is taking applications for Christmas assistance on the following dates:

 Oct. 17 to 21

 Nov. 7 to 11 and Nov. 14 to 18

 Dec. 5 to 16.

You will need:

 Your personal identification

 Proof of physical address

 Proof of income

For each person in your household one of the following, birth certificate, medical card or Social Security card

Trunk or Treat on Halloween at FVCC

Flathead Valley Community College Veterans’ Association and Student Government groups will host the third annual Trunk or Treat on Monday, Oct. 31, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the west-facing parking lot on campus. The event is free and open to the public, offering a safe one-stop trick-or-treating venue for families.

FVCC is seeking people to decorate their vehicle trunks and hand out treats to children during the event. FVCC will provide the treats for distribution, and there is no cost to participate. Cash prizes will be awarded for the best trunk decorations.
