United Way Day of Caring a huge success

Dear North Idaho,

Thank you for making the United Way Day of Caring a huge success! Twenty-three local nonprofits welcomed more than 300 volunteers to 31 different project sites across Kootenai County.

Together, you gave more than 1,200 hours of volunteer time, representing $24,000 of work in our community. In addition, you donated 3,500 pounds of food and $2,200 cash to local food banks. You painted buildings, kennels and arenas, split wood, tore down walls, ripped out carpet, organized warehouses, created scrapbooks and centerpieces, and landscaped. You built garden boxes, sorted dozens of boxes of food, cleaned storerooms and spruced up playgrounds.

Safe Passage, which received volunteers from US Bank, wrote in:

“This year, we were so overwhelmed at the Thrift Store that our staff literally could not get their jobs done because the donation area was just completely overpowering. Not only did your team get through that entire area and each of the processing stations, you repaired the donation area itself so it is more stable and organized and cleaned…making it a manageable space moving forward. This is not only having an impact on staff morale, it is going to result in increased Thrift Store sales, 100 percent of which goes back to supporting survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence in our community.”

The Day of Caring promotes the spirit and value of volunteerism, increases the awareness of local service agencies, and demonstrates what people working together for the common good can accomplish. It is a piece of the year-round work we do with your help to improve lives and create opportunities in education, income and health.

You make a statement when you volunteer: that we are a community that cares and we are all in together. Thank you.
