Former clerk receives jail time

SANDPOINT — A former Bonner County woman convicted of embezzling funds from the city of Clark Fork was ordered to serve 90 days in jail for violating the terms of her probation, court records show.
However, Sandra Jaan Clawson, was given credit for 61 days she’s already served, leaving 29 days to serve. The sentence was further shortened for good behavior while incarcerated, which means she’s set to be released on Tuesday.
Clawson, formerly known as Sandra Brockus, was accused of pocketing money residents paid to settle utility bills in 2009. She pleaded guilty to a felony count of misusing public funds and given a suspended one- to two-year prison term. Clawson was ordered to serve 30 days of incarceration as a condition of probation.
Clawson, 45, had her probation transferred to Arizona, but corrections officials said she dropped off their radar after relocating. She couldn’t be found at her residence in Chandler and had also left her job.
During an evidentiary hearing in 1st District Court on Oct. 4, Clawson admitted she had absconded from supervision, failed to complete community service and failed to pay fines and costs in her case.
Clawson’s attorney, Michael Waldrup, said his client became homeless in Arizona and fell off the map after a close friend of hers died. Clawson apologized for failing to follow through on her court-ordered obligations, court documents indicate.
Friends and family described Clawson as an attentive single mother who had gotten out of an unhappy marriage but turned her life around. They said Clawson planned to address an arrest warrant after her son graduated from high school and that she was gainfully employed.
Clawson was arrested after the warrant was discovered during a traffic stop on Aug. 4 in Mesa, court records show.
Clawson was granted a withheld judgment following her conviction, which meant that she could petition to have the conviction removed from her record upon successful completion of probation.
Judge Barbara Buchanan, however, revoked the withheld judgment and ordered her to serve 90 days in jail and 200 hours of community service.
