Four teenagers walked away from a Saturday night car wreck after their vehicle went off a bridge near Marion.

Marion Fire Chief Katie Mast said around 8:15 p.m. on Saturday the vehicle was traveling across an old wooden bridge on Griz Lane west of Marion when it hit the railing on one side of the bridge and went over the other side. But rather than falling 10 feet directly into the Little Bitterroot River, the vehicle landed across a power line, Mast said. According to Mast, the rear end of the vehicle was wedged beneath the bridge, allowing the teens to climb out a window and drop about four feet into the river to safety and call for help.

“They were OK, just a little bit wet and cold,” Mast said.

Marion Fire Department, Montana Highway Patrol and Bolster’s Towing responded to the call. Mast said Bolster’s Towing was the only service with a heavy tow truck that could lift the vehicle straight back up without causing damage to the old bridge.

The accident is under investigation by the Montana Highway Patrol.
