THE FRONT ROW: State berths in volleyball on the line

The 5A Region 1 volleyball championship will be decided Tuesday night, when No. 3 seed Lewiston (24-7) visits top-seeded Lake City (21-1) at 7 p.m.
The winner advances to state Oct. 28-29 at Skyline High in Idaho Falls.
No. 4 seed Post Falls (18-15) visits No. 2 Coeur d’Alene (17-10) on Tuesday in a loser-out game. The two remaining teams play Thursday for a berth in a Saturday state play-in match in Grangeville vs. the fifth-place team from District 3.
The 4A Region 1 tournament begins Thursday, with No. 2 seed Lakeland hosting No. 3 Moscow in a loser-out match. The winner plays at No. 1 seed Sandpoint on Saturday for the region’s lone berth to state Oct. 28-29 at Hillcrest High in Idaho Falls.
The 3A District 1 tournament begins tonight, with No. 5 seed Coeur d’Alene Charter playing at No. 4 Kellogg at 6. The winner advances to Tuesday’s play at Timberlake, playing the top-seeded Tigers at 7 p.m. Before that, Bonners Ferry and Priest River play at 5:30. The championship match is Thursday at 7 at Timberlake, with the winner moving on to state Oct. 28-29 at Madison High in Rexburg. The second-place match is Friday at the higher seed, with that winner also advancing to state.
St. Maries is the top seed for the 2A District 1-2 volleyball tourney, which begins Tuesday at Genesee. 1 1/2 berths are available to state Oct. 28-29 at Idaho Falls High.
The 1A Division II District 1 volleyball tournament begins tonight, with No. 5 seed Mullan facing No. 4 Genesis Prep at 6 at Lakeland High in a loser-out match. The tourney resumes Wednesday at Timberlake, with the Mullan-Genesis Prep winner facing top-seeded Kootenai at 4, followed by Lakeside vs. Clark Fork at 5:30. The winners play at 7 in the championship match for a berth at state Oct. 28-29 at Bonneville High in Idaho Falls. The second-place team travels to Moscow on Saturday for a play-in match vs. the District 2 runner-up.
The state 5A boys and girls soccer tournaments are scheduled for Coeur d’Alene, Lake City and Post Falls high schools, beginning Thursday. In the boys tourney, Coeur d’Alene opens against Bonneville of Idaho Falls at 9 a.m. at Post Falls High, and Lake City takes on Boise at 2 at Post Falls. Lake City’s girls meet Highland at 9 a.m. at Lake City High.
The championship games are Saturday at 11 a.m. (boys) and 2 p.m. (girls) at Coeur d’Alene High.
State-qualifying cross country meets are scheduled for Thursday, with the 5A and 4A meets at Farragut State Park, the 3A meet at the Ranch Club in Priest River, and the 2A and 1A meets at Grangeville Golf Course. All state meets are Oct. 29 in Pocatello.
In high school football, Post Falls plays host to Coeur d’Alene on Friday for the 5A Inland Empire League’s second berth to the state playoffs. Timberlake can wrap up another Intermountain League title with a victory at Kellogg, and St. Maries can win the Central Idaho League with a win at home over Orofino.
North Idaho College’s men’s and women’s soccer team are home for a pair of matches this week, on Wednesday against Columbia Basin and Saturday vs. Walla Walla.
