Edward Allen Hempel, 63, of Post Falls, Idaho, passed away Oct. 10, 2016, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Ed was born April 6, 1953, in Wallace, Idaho, to John and Mary (Blum) Hempel.
Ed grew up in the Silver Valley where he attended and graduated from Wallace High School in 1971. Following graduation, he joined the United States Navy and proudly served as a submariner during the Vietnam War.
After seven years of honorable service to his country, Ed worked in Bremerton, Wash., in the shipyards and later became a partner in a solar heating company. Following, he worked as an HVAC and Refrigeration wholesale supplier for more than 30 years.
Ed’s hobbies included anything the outdoors had to offer, including camping, hunting and fishing. He was a science and history buff as well as an avid Seahawks and Gonzaga basketball fan. He also loved being involved with his girls’ activities and spending time with friends and family.
He was an active member in his church communities as well as with the Submarine Veterans and the American Legion. Ed truly loved helping others and profoundly touched the lives of all that knew him.
Ed is survived by two daughters, Priya Hempel of Atlanta, Ga., and Abby Hempel of Spokane Valley, Wash.; one brother, John Hempel of Georgetown, Texas; eight nephews and six nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A celebration of Ed’s life will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2016, at Christ The King Lutheran Church, 1700 E. Pennsylvania Ave., Coeur d’Alene. Following at 3 p.m., inurnment will be at the Washington State Veterans Cemetery in Medical Lake, Wash.
The family suggests that memorials may be made to Kootenai County Search and Rescue, 10865 N. Ramsey Road, Hayden, ID 83835, or to the American Legion Post 143, 1138 E. Poleline Ave., Post Falls, ID 83854.
