POST FALLS — Two male suspects were arrested on multiple charges early Tuesday after the driver allegedly refused to pull over for an officer attempting to make a stop.

The driver, Blake Barnhill, 27, Post Falls, was arrested for eluding, possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to use and driving without privileges.

The passenger, Leslie Humphreys, 20, Coeur d'Alene, was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to use and being wanted for probation violations.

According to police, Barnhill pulled from Sixth Avenue onto Idaho Street in a 1997 Toyota Camry in front of an officer on patrol at 12:07 a.m. into the opposing lane of traffic facing what would be oncoming traffic.

Barnhill continued to accelerate onto Fifth Avenue despite the officers' patrol car lights being activated.

"He proceeded onto Fifth by the Immaculate Conception Church and turned south on Lincoln into an alley," Post Falls Police Capt. Greg McLean said.

Barnhill made abrupt turns with no effort to pull over, the police report states.

"The speed did not have time to reach high levels, but the abrupt turns were both reckless and dangerous," the report states.

When Barnhill drove into the alley off Lincoln, the officer suspected he was headed to a known drug house in the area and believed both occupants would run if they pulled over, the report states.

"As suspected, the vehicle made another abrupt turn behind the (home) coming to a sudden stop," the report states. "I positioned my patrol unit with the push bars close to the driver's door, attempting to create a barrier that he could not get around.

"The passenger quickly began to open his door and I immediately exited my vehicle giving warning to get back in the car and show me their hands."

The report states Barnhill "put his hands everywhere except where he was ordered to."

With his pistol drawn while waiting for backup help, the officer warned the suspects could be bitten by the K9 if they fled, the report states.

"They wouldn't sit still and at one point the driver tried to get out," McLean said. "They were argumentative, but not physically resistant."

Both suspects were arrested after backup officers arrived.

Barnhill told an officer he made a poor turn because the police car had stopped in front of him, but the officer wrote he'd never been in front of the car. Barnhill told police he didn't pull over because he was scared.

Drug paraphernalia were located in the car, including a syringe with possible heroin residue.

Barnhill was being held at the jail on Monday afternoon on a $1,100 bond. He has been booked into the local jail 14 times as an adult, including for theft, DUI, obstructing, destruction of evidence, drug possession, providing false information to police and indecent exposure.

Humphreys' bond is $30,300. He has been booked into the local jail 11 times, including for petty theft, burglary and probation violation.
