SOCCER: Columbia Falls, Polson host state semifinals

Columbia Falls and Polson both hope the results on its home turf is far different in rematch battles on the pitch.
The Columbia Falls Wildcats and Polson Pirates face teams today in Class A semifinal soccer postseason action that they lost to during the regular season.
The Columbia Falls boys (11-1-1) host Belgrade (11-2-0) at Flip Darling Field at noon while the Polson girls (10-2-1) entertain Billings Central (12-1-0) at 11 a.m.
Belgrade defeated the visiting Wildcats 6-3, breaking the match open with four goals in the second half the first time around.
Jeffrey DeBuse had a hat trick for Belgrade.
Logan Stephens scored twice for Columbia Falls.
Morgan Ferestad scored twice in a 3-0 Billings Central victory over the visiting Pirates. Zoie Althoff had the other score.
Both matches were on Sept. 9.
“It’s a noon showdown at high noon for sure,” Columbia Falls coach O’Brien Byrd said.
“The only team to beat us this year. There are a lot of motivating factors for both teams. We want to make it to the state championship. We want redemption for the earlier loss. We learned a lot from that.”
Columbia Falls is 7-0 at home this fall, a statistic Byrd likes to talk about with his team.
“The guys have talked about legacy, our field being sacred,” he said, “having other teams dread coming to Columbia Falls because of our crowd and how we play on our home field.”
In this matchup, he said it will boil down to 20 percent tactics and 80 percent heart and focus.
“The problem with Belgrade is there is not one or two kids to worry about,” he said.
“There are five who can get on the scoreboard. You can’t focus on just one.”
Columbia Falls is seeking its first state championship since 2005. The Wildcats last appearance in a semifinal match was 2007.
In other semifinal play today, (boys) Corvallis (13-0-0) hosts Billings Central (11-2-0) at 3:30 p.m. while Laurel (9-2-2) faces visiting Belgrade (8-3-2).
