PRIEST RIVER — The Gleason Fire is wrapped up, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

The fire on the south side of Gleason Mountain west of Priest Lake burned for 12 1/2 weeks and grew to approximately 230 acres.

No personnel were assigned to fight the fire and no structures were threatened.

“With the Gleason Fire, managers decided that because the values at risk were limited, the best approach would be to monitor the fire and wait until an opportunity allowed us to safely and aggressively attack the fire,” the agency said in a final report released on Wednesday.

Fire-prediction modeling and fire behavior specialists determined that the fire would grow very slowly and threats to infrastructure were deemed very low. The fire risk was assessed on a daily basis. The fire burned in a topographic depression that was somewhat sheltered from winds.

The fire grew on sunny, warm days, but flames mostly consumed shrub fields and dead or dying lodge pole pine trees.

“The fire left a mosaic of burned and unburned vegetation that will create wildlife habitat and provide a fuel break in the landscape,” the final report said.

An order closing U.S. Forest Service Trail No. 162 has been lifted, although the agency counsels forest visitors to be on the lookout for unstable trees as well as slick walking surfaces when traversing burned areas.
