COEUR d’ALENE — It was 5-foot freshman dynamo forward Madyson Smith and superb sophomore midfielder Hannah Clarke’s show for Lake City for the second straight day, on Friday at Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.
But a complete team effort set up an instant classic of a semifinal in the state 5A girls soccer tournament, which Lake City won, 3-2, 46 seconds into the first overtime. It was in the 81st minute when the Timberwolves’ Smith booted a rebound of a golden goal from 6 yards out at an open net, from right to her left and safely on the back of the net for the Timberwolves (13-3-2).
Running on a full sprint, Smith booted a hard ball off a diving save by goalkeeper Hannah McFadden of the Patriots (12-1-3), who made two saves and allowed goals by Annica Wilson in the 10th minute, Lily Scott on an amazing boot of a high ball from 40 yards away in the 44th minute on a regular play and of course, Smith.
Clarke, who like Smith is a key substitute, set the whole thing up, making a sliding shot that McFadden initially saved. But the ball bounced off to Lake City’s right-hand side near a sizable crowd, so Smith got the goal past McFadden, who was on the ground recovering from the play of Clarke, who earned the assist.
“She came around and passed me the ball,” Smith said. “It’s exciting, but it’s more exciting for our team than it is for myself. I was just the lucky one, I scored the goal but it was really about all of us. It (the goal) was going by really fast in my mind. We put in a lot of work to get here. It’s amazing (to get to the title game), it’s really awesome to be a part of and it’s fun to be able to witness.”
Clarke was excited as well.
“I wasn’t expecting her to score but I just went through and we all had to give it everything we had,” Clarke said of Smith. “I just went in hoping it (a goal) would happen and Mady just happened to be there for the second striaght day and I’m super happy that we both were given to the opportunity. I’m just really happy I can be part of the team lately and be able to score two goals (in the first game vs. Highland).”
Up next for Lake City is the championship game, where the Timberwolves will play against Rocky Mountain (16-3-2) of Meridian today at 2 p.m. at Coeur d’Alene. Rocky Mountain beat Timberline in the other semifinal on Friday, 1-0 at Irma Anderl, on a goal by sophomore forward Jordyn Dalling. Rocky Mountain scored three goals in six minutes in a state play-in game, a 3-2 win over Coeur d’Alene last Saturday at Payette High. The Vikings led 2-0 in that game.
The game on Friday played on a soggy field and steady rain was a rematch of last season’s title game, won by Centennial on penalty kicks.
“We knew it was going to be like this,” Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. “No PKs, but we knew it was going to take this long. So we said ‘You know, if it goes into PKs or whatever, it doesn’t matter. We’re going to play all the way through. I told them when they came off (the field after regulation) that ‘You’re not tired and this is what we do and we don’t forget anything. I said, ‘let’s start fast, and you’re not tired. And you will be mentally tougher than they are. We knew it (about the rematch), Centennial’s a great program. They’re the two-time defending state champs for a reason. They have a great history and they have a high level of soccer IQ in that program for sure.”
Lake City beat Highland in the first round on Thursday, 4-0, with Smith scoring the first goal and Clark scoring two goals, with leading scorer Havana Johnson also scoring in that game.
“We wanted to move on and it’s a group that always works hard as they can and they’ve come a long way, and they’ve gotten even better over the last two weeks and you know, we played well. I thought we were real organized, we haven’t faced a formation quite like that, it looked like a 3-5-2, but I mean it was tough for us. But there’s a reason why we play the Meads and the Central Valleys and those schools because it forces us to be ready for these types of moments. We know that’s going to make us much better.”
As for Rocky Mountain, junior forward Josie Bush was a very dangerous threat and she scored a game-tying goal at 1 in the 15th minute by tapping a ball up and over Lake City goalkeeper Emily Parson, who made five saves and a great stop in the first half off Adrienne Gulley from 3 yards out.
Bush has a scholarship offer from BYU as well. Delaney Johnston scored a game-tying goal to make it 2-2 after Scott’s goal made it 2-1.
“I’m proud of our effort and at the end of the day, I wouldn’t want to lose to any other team,” Bush said.
