THE FRONT ROW WITH JASON ELLIOTT: Saturday, Oct. 22, 2016
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 8 years, 3 months AGO
Chances are that if you’ve looked on these pages in the recent year, you’ve came across updates on former Post Falls High soccer standout Kelcie Hedge, who has since gone on to play for the University of Washington.
No, we haven’t forgotten her this year.
She’s got a really good excuse for her redshirt season with the Huskies.
HEDGE, WHO played two years at Post Falls High before trying out and being selected to the United States under-17 national team, has been named to the U-20 team for the U.S. women’s World Cup team.
She’ll redshirt this season, her sophomore year academically at Washington.
Hedge will travel with the U.S. team to Papua New Guinea, where the team will begin the tournament on Nov. 14 against France. They will face New Zealand on Nov. 17, followed by Ghana on Nov. 21 to round out group play. All of the team’s matches will be played in Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea, and broadcast on the FOX networks.
In case you forgot, Hedge totaled 11 points on four goals and three assists in 2015, and was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman team. She started all 21 matches for Washington last fall, recording her first career goal against Michigan, a game-winner in the 89th minute.
Hedge has four goals on the international level during her time with the U-17 national team.
WITH A win at Sandpoint today in the 4A Region 1 volleyball championship match, Lakeland High could advance to the state tournament for the first time since the 2005 season.
Should that happen, they can thank freshman Keely DeVore for getting the team into a position to accomplish that.
“She helped us serving, digging the ball and diving for everything,” first-year Lakeland coach Adriano de Souza said Thursday night, after second-seeded Lakeland rallied for a 21-25, 16-25, 25-20, 25-20, 15-11 over third-seeded Moscow in the first round in Rathdrum. “She was just high energy tonight and really changed the girls’ attitude and made it possible to get the win.”
“She had a huge impact on the match,” de Souza added. “She’s only a freshman and was just amazing tonight.”
To get back to state, they’ll need another outing like that of Thursday.
“I knew we could play better than we started (against Moscow),” de Souza said. “The key was making less mistakes and we started to send the ball onto their side of the court. We just worked on getting back to the basics and didn’t miss many serves in the final three sets. That’s what made the difference.”
IN A few weeks, we’ll transition to the winter sports slate of basketball and wrestling, but NAIA University of Great Falls will determine its lineup for the start of the season closer to our home than theirs.
The Argos, which received 13.5 votes in the preseason rankings, will hold their intra-squad scrimmage tonight at The Arena in Post Falls starting at 6.
Luke Roberts, an assistant at Post Falls High, wrestled at Great Falls, and arranged for the Argos to come to this area.
Great Falls returns to the area to face North Idaho College on Nov. 12 at Christianson Gym.
Speaking of the Cardinals, they’ll have an alumni dual tonight at 7 p.m. at Christianson Gym, then hit the road to take on Montana State-Northern in Havre next Friday night to officially open the season.
