BOONE, N.C. — Coach Paul Petrino praised the Idaho Vandals’ effort Saturday after their 37-19 loss to Appalachian State before 26,931 at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

His praise was justified – so, too, was his disappointment in a loss that featured four field goals and three turnovers.

“Most of our team played their tails off,” he said after Idaho evened its record at 4-4, 2-2 in Sun Belt play. “I know some guy just gave unbelievable great effort. When they do that, you’re proud of them.”

Some obvious ones were kicker/punter Austin Rehkow who was good on all four of his field goals and his lone PAT. Another would be tight end Trent Cowan who had 10 catches for 118 yards, which includes the eight-yarder that was the Vandals’ only touchdown of the game.

Then there were the mistakes.

Appalachian State broke it open with 13 unanswered points in the third quarter, highlighted by freshman Clifton Duck’s 44-yard pick-6 on an overthrown pass. Moore extended the Mountaineers’ lead to 30-9 lead when he powered up the middle for a 5-yard score.

Backup J.P. Caruso threw his first touchdown pass of the season for Appalachian State late in the fourth. Duck had two interceptions.

“You can’t do that when you play that good of a team,” Petrino said.

Matt Linehan went 26 of 41 for 294 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions for Idaho.

The Vandals’ total offense output (357) was just shy of Appalachian State’s (375) but they settled for field goals four times.

Taylor Lamb threw for 220 yards and rushed for one touchdown and Jalin Moore had 114 yards rushing and a score for Appalachian State (5-2, 3-0).

Defensively, Tony Lashley had 11 tackles, Jayshawn Jordan 10, and Tueni Lupeamanu and Ed Hall had eight each.

“I like that our guys fought until the end,” Petrino said. “A lot of our guys really played their hearts out.”

The Vandals scored their first touchdown with 4 seconds remaining when Trent Cowan scored on an 8-yard grab. It was the first TD allowed by Appalachian State since Sept. 24.

The Vandals have the first of two byes next weekend before traveling to Louisiana-Lafayette on Nov. 5.
