A 71-year-old Blanchard man died as a result of injuries sustained in a crash south of Spirit Lake on Tuesday.

According to Idaho State Police, Robert W. Sands was southbound on Highway 41 at 1:26 p.m. at McWilliams Road when the 1997 Mazda Protege he was driving went off the southbound edge of the road.

Sands overcorrected the vehicle, causing it to come back onto the road. The vehicle then went across both lanes of travel and off the northbound road edge, striking a tree.

Sands, who was not wearing his seatbelt, was transported to Kootenai Health where he was pronounced dead at 5:45 p.m.
