SPIRIT LAKE — A Blanchard man was fatally injured in a single-vehicle collision on Highway 41 on Tuesday afternoon.

Idaho State Police said Robert W. Sands was headed southbound when he went off the west side of the highway in a Mazda Protegé. Sands overcorrected, came back onto the roadway and across both lanes of travel. The Mazda compact then went off the east side of the highway and struck a tree, state police said.

Sands, 71, was not wearing a seatbelt, according to ISP. Sands was taken to Kootenai Health in Coeur d’Alene, where he was later pronounced dead.

The crash happened at 1:26 p.m. at the intersection of West McWilliams Road, south of town.
