A Rathdrum woman is dead after a multi-vehicle crash that shut down Interstate 90 in Liberty Lake this morning.

Laura A. Lafferty, 71, died at the scene of the collision, according to a report from Washington State Patrol. Her passenger, Richard S. Lafferty, 50, also of Rathdrum, was injured and transported by ambulance to Sacred Heart Heart Medical Center.

The crash occurred in the westbound lanes of the interstate. The patrol report states a commercial GMC sweeper truck driven by Stephen D. Roche, 31, of Spokane, changed into the left lane striking the right side of Lafferty’s 2004 Chevrolet Tracker. Lafferty’s auto struck the concrete barrier in the median, climbed the barrier and hit the overpass. As Lafferty’s vehicle was airborne, a third vehicle, driven by Jasmine Kuhnhausen, 32, of Coeur d’Alene, struck Lafferty’s auto.

The crash, which remains under investigation, snarled rush-hour traffic heading toward Spokane.

Neither Roche, nor Kuhnhausen were reported injured at the scene. Richard Lafferty remained hospitalized late Thursday afternoon in serious condition.
