COEUR d’ALENE — What a difference a week made in the growth of the Lake City Timberwolves football team.

And they’re just getting started.

Grant Clark had 24 carries for 230 yards — 197 coming in the first half — of a 51-6 win over the Lewis and Clark Tigers of the Greater Spokane League on Friday night.

“It’s probably the most incredible feeling I’ve had since I started coaching 15 years ago,” first-year Lake City coach Bryce Erickson said. “To deal with the adversity the kids did last week, come out and have a great week of practice and dominate all three phases of the football game tonight was great. Physically we dominated the football game, and that’s not easy to do after getting dominated like that last week. I’m really, really proud of this coaching staff and these young men. It’s a great victory, and it’s just the start.”

Clark opened the scoring on a 2-yard run with 7:58 remaining in the first quarter.

Lewis and Clark tied the game on a 37-yard punt return from Cameron Duncan a little over two minutes later.

After that, the floodgates opened on the scoreboard, as well as on the field as rain began to pour.

Lake City lost its opener last week to Madison High of Rexburg 48-7 in Coeur d’Alene.

“We wanted to bury it,” Erickson said of that game. “Our motto is to play the next play, and the next game, and that’s what we’ll do after this game. There was a lot of good things that we’ll study from this game, and there was a lot of things that we learned from last week. The kids did a great job of being coachable and coming out and fixing the mistakes that we fixed and executed. They played their butts off and it’s one of the most proudest moments I’ve had as a coach.”

Ram Lettau had nine carries for 82 yards, including a 24-yard touchdown run to give Lake City a 38-6 halftime lead. Matt Duchow accounted for a pair of first-quarter touchdowns, throwing a 23-yard pass to Jason Pierard and running for a 24-yard score with 44.6 seconds remaining in the first.

“One thing I’ve learned, at any level, is that you’ve got to be able to run the football,” Erickson said. “We took some shots down the field and hit some big plays, but our offensive line was dominating the line of scrimmage. We had two running backs that played amazing today and you don’t have to do something amazing. If something works, you continue to go to it. When we got into the second half, I didn’t want to do anything to let them back into the game.”

Clark scored on runs of 2, 5, 1 and 3 yards in the game, breaking a 64-yard run before the half to the 1-yard line, setting up his 1-yard run.

“It was a very exciting night and it felt good to bounce back,” said Clark, a junior. “Mostly, we run an inside zone and coach Erickson has told me that the cutback is going to be there, so I was looking for that and finding it tonight. I couldn’t have done it tonight without my O-line. They’re the reason I can move the ball up the field like I did tonight.”

“He’s an amazing player,” Erickson said of Clark. “He didn’t have a great first game, but he’s one of those kids that watched the tape and realized that his best runs were going to be to the outside and to get his foot in the ground and get north and south. And he did an amazing job of that tonight. We had some success and we started to get some flow from the backers. And he’s going to continue to get better. But, he couldn’t have done that without those guys up front.”

Lake City (1-1) travels to Central Valley next Friday.

Lewis and Clark (0-1) will face Kamiakin of Kennewick, Wash., next Friday at Joe Albi Stadium in Spokane.
