Stock the fridge and dust off the flat screen. Pro football starts this week — and so do this year’s Coeur d’Alene Press All-Star Pigskin Prognosticators.

Every week through the Super Bowl, 12 peerless pickers will guess the winners of each NFL game. They’ll be on the record and in The Press sports section every Thursday, playing not just for personal pride but for a worthy cause.

Each all-star prognosticator is playing for a local charity. When the Super Bowl is over, the three players with the best records will win advertising in The Press for their charity. First place will earn four half-pages in the newspaper that can be used however the charity wishes; second place receives two half-pages, and third place receives one half-page. The advertising can be used anytime in 2017.

Not that they need a lot of encouragement, but the prognosticators will happily insult each other, accuse one another of cheating, and engage in a host of other entertaining behind-the-scenes shenanigans throughout the season. We’ll do our best to share their charades with readers in the sports section weekly.

And now, ladies and gentlemen, the 2016-17 Coeur d’Alene Press All-Star Pigskin Prognosticators are trotting out onto the field. Here’s your starting lineup!

Eve Knudtsen, Knudtsen Chevrolet. Eve is dashing off the starting line for Special Needs Recreation.

John Gervais, Findlay Automotive. John is providing service for Holidays & Heroes.

Jeff Runge, Runge Furniture. Jeff has jumped out of his easy chair for Tesh, Inc.

Mark Koerner, Koerner Furniture. Mark is stocking up smart picks for the Coeur d’Alene food bank.

Ryan Davis, Boys & Girls Club. Ryan is playing for — surprise! — St. Vincent de Paul.

Jeff Conroy, St. Vincent de Paul. Jeff is playing for — yep, you got it — Boys & Girls Club.

Duffy Smock, Windermere Coeur d’Alene Realty. It takes a Duffy to raise a Children’s Village.

John Beutler, Century 21 Beutler & Associates. Beutler is pigskin presiding on behalf of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA).

Vic Holmes, Rathdrum Mayor. Vic is staking his claim for Idaho Youth Ranch.

Steve Griffitts, Hayden Mayor. Steve is getting a gridiron checkup for Kootenai Health Foundation.

Tim Kiefer, Lakeland High football coach: Tim is going deep for Rathdrum Lions Club backpack fund.

Blaine Bennett, Post Falls High football coach: Blaine is dedicating his season to the Jeff Hinz Fund.

Wish them all well and follow the fun every Thursday in the Coeur d’Alene Press and Post Falls Press.
