MOSES LAKE — With flashing school zone lights in Moses Lake malfunctioning, drivers are asked to use extra caution in school zones around the city.

The flashing school zone lights are not functioning because of a controller software and hardware issue, according to Moses Lake Police Department Capt. Mike Williams. The city is working to fix the problem, but officials are estimating it will take at least a month before the lights are working properly again. As a result, the MLPD is urging drivers to exercise caution in and around school zones, playgrounds and other locations where children gather.

“Extra law enforcement patrols will continue in the area, with officers looking for vehicles being operated in an unsafe manner,” Williams stated. “As a reminder, Washington state law requires drivers not to drive faster than what is reasonable and prudent based on roadway conditions and hazards, regardless of the posted maximum speed. These hazards include other vehicles and pedestrian traffic.”

School zone related fines include: $214 for going over a reduced speed limit by 5 mph, $419 for passing a stopped bus with flashing lights, $228 for failing to stop for a crossing guard and $126 for failing to yield to a pedestrian.

Moses Lake’s street crews are planning to change school zone signs in the city that currently state the reduced school speed limit in effect from “When lights are flashing,” to “When children are present.”
