Undefeated, a home opener going into the third weekend of the season and with no major injuries to speak of, life is good thus far for the Glacier High School football team.

The Wolfpack offense is rolling up some high numbers, having scored 49 and 35 points in road victories over Bozeman and Helena High, respectively.

The defense held Helena to a touchdown, but surrendered 45 points in a wild shootout versus Bozeman last weekend.

Glacier is one of three unbeaten teams at this point, along with Billings Senior and Billings West.

On the agenda tonight, 7 p.m. at Legends Stadium, is Helena Capital. The Bruins, 1-1, are one of eight teams who split games the first two weekends.

Capital opened with a 14-7 loss at Billings West. The Bruins earned a forfeit win, 14-0, over Missoula Hellgate last weekend.

Hellgate is not fielding a team this season.

“I think you always believe in a group of kids that they will have certain qualities when facing adverse situations,” Glacier coach Grady Bennett said of last week’s thriller.

“You have to have hope, believe and trust. You never know until it happens.”

Bozeman took an early 20-7 lead on the Wolfpack.

Glacier regrouped, came back to go in front 21-20, but Bozeman retaliated to go back on top 39-21 in the third quarter.

In the end, Glacier marched 80 yards in 2 minutes 22 seconds for the final points and the victory. The winning score was an 8-yard pass from quarterback Tadan Gilman to Scout Willcut. Cameron Anderson was good on the PAT kick with 15 seconds left in play.

“I was so impressed with the leadership,” Bennett said.

“It (game) was back and forth. It was unbelievable in every offensive huddle I stepped into on the sideline the kids were still positive. They would say ‘We got this. We’re fine. We can respond. We got your back.’ They kept believing.

“We try to teach that, being optimistic, how to handle adversity, but again, you really never know until a team is in that situation and how they will react. This team? Boy! What an incredible, resilient group. It shows how much they believe in each other.”

That type of win, Bennett said, can carry a team on to bigger and better things.

“First thing I told them (afterwards), I’m so proud of your poise, composure and how you maintained that on the sideline. That they believe and trust in each other. I haven’t been surprised at all. It’s what I kind of expected.”

Drew Turner, who had touchdown runs of 1, 23 and 3 yards at Bozeman, finished with 218 rushing yards. That ties a school record for a single game. Thomas Trefney was the first to do it.

Turner’s 303 all-purpose yards in that game was second best in school history behind Logan Jones, who has the record with 308.

Turner also had 15 receiving yards and 70 yards in returns in Bozeman.

“I knew he could be very good,” Bennett said of Turner.

“He’s stepped right in.”

Bennett said the offensive line has been spectacular the first two weeks.

“Kellen Bemis (center) has done a fabulous job,” Bennett said.

“A great leader. He makes the right calls. He plays so tough and intelligent.”

Jaxen Hashley, last year a tight end, has moved to the offensive tackle spot for his senior season.

“He has selflessly bought into switching that role up front for us,” Bennett said.

Middle linebacker Jared Brenden, who broke his thumb in the season opener and missed last week’s game, is back and will play against Capital.

“A traditional powerhouse, well coached,” Bennett said of this week’s foe.

“Their kids are so disciplined in what they do. They won’t beat themselves. You have to beat them.”

Bennett said Glacier is off to a stellar start against two very talented teams.

“Were 2-0 on the road, tough places to play at,” he said.

“Now we have a nice stretch of home games coming up. We’re hoping to take advantage of that.”

Tonight’s game will be broadcast on 103.9 FM.

NOTE: The Glacier Booster Club will be offering memberships and selling season tickets ($55 for adults and $20 for students) before the game, starting at 6 p.m. Dickey’s Barbecue Pit will help with the event at Legends Stadium by selling chopped pork sandwiches, chips and water.
