I took a hike up the White River to get some photos of the sockeye salmon, and it reminded me that there is an event coming up soon. It is the best free festival in Washington State.

It is the Columbia River Salmon Festival at the National Fish Hatchery in Leavenworth, and it was founded as a celebration of the life cycle of salmon.

On Saturday, September 17th, the hatchery opens its grounds to the public and families will find activities that will keep the kids busy all day.

There is a long list of things to see and many hands-on experiences for the kids that are not only fun, but teach them about salmon and the outdoors.

I have attended Salmon Fest for many years and gladly give up a day of fishing to participate.

In addition to the activities planned the Native American Encampment is always a huge hit. There will be dancing to watch and an actual reed mat lodge is erected for people to see.

Be sure to sample the salmon done the Native American way. The Outdoor Recreation Area features things to do outdoors, and that’s where you will find me. I hope to see you there.
