SANDPOINT — A Sandpoint man is accused of attempting to lure a teen into his van last July.

Michael Robert Daugherty is charged with enticing a child, a misdemeanor. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Bonner County Magistrate Court on Tuesday.

The teen told Sandpoint Police she was walking home from a friend’s house when she noticed a van had circled the block near Cedar Street and Boyer Avenue on the night of July 31. She said the van reappeared and its driver asked if she wanted to hang out but the frightened teen declined, a police report said.

The description of the vehicle led police to Daugherty, who admitted trying to chat up the teen on the belief that she was in her 20s. Daugherty told police that he felt bad for mistaking the girl’s age and scaring her, the report said.

Daugherty, 61, was connected to a report of suspicious activity on South Ella Avenue on July 31, although no charges were filed, according to court documents.

Daugherty was also investigated for enticement in 2010, court records indicate. In that incident, he approached a young woman and asked if she wanted a ride. He was not charged with enticement apparently because the woman was not a minor, although he was charged with driving under the influence. He pleaded guilty to the DUI charge and served two days in jail, according to the Idaho Supreme Court Data Repository.
