PASCO, Wash. — Alec Maldonado scored on a deflection of a Kobe Murphree shot to send the North Idaho College men’s soccer team to a 1-0 win against the Columbia Basin College Hawks in the Northwest Athletic Conference East Region opener for both schools on Saturday.

“(NIC goalkeeper) Garrett (Boyce) played the ball up the middle to Kobe and it ricocheted to the right side of the field,” NIC men’s soccer coach Ken Thompson said. “Nobody is going to beat Alec to that ball and he just slammed it in. It was an angle shot and he was able to get a shot off fast enough they couldn’t get to it.”

Boyce, a Coeur d’Alene High product, finished with 13 saves in the shutout for NIC (1-2-2), which travels to Treasure Valley on Wednesday.

Columbia Basin is 2-1-1.

First half — none. Second half — 1, NIC, Alec Maldonado (unassisted), 50:00.

Shots on goal — NIC 10, CBC 19.

Saves — NIC, Garrett Boyce, 13; CBC, Max Herrera 10.
