COEUR d'ALENE — Motorists are urged to use caution today and Wednesday as city of Coeur d'Alene crews work to replace a signal control cabinet at the intersection of Prairie Avenue and Atlas Road.
The cabinet, which was damaged on Aug. 16 when a vehicle collided with it, will cost approximately $21,000 to replace. In a news release, Deputy City Administrator Sam Taylor wrote the traffic signal will be turned off today and Wednesday, and four-way stop signs will be put in place while city crews replace the cabinet.
"The city encourages motorists traveling this intersection to drive very slow to provide a safe working environment for the repair crew," Taylor added.
According to Assistant Street Superintendent Mike Willis, the Post Falls Highway District will pay for the replacement cabinet, as well as file the appropriate insurance claims to recoup the costs. There is a mutual agreement between the city, highway district, and city of Hayden, when it comes to maintaining the intersection, Taylor added.
"The easiest way to do it is to just have one jurisdiction handle the claim," Taylor said.
City officials expect work to replace the cabinet will be completed Wednesday.
Willis told The Press the cabinet sustained damage on Aug. 16, when a driver going eastbound on Prairie Avenue struck it around 5 p.m. Willis said when a second driver going westbound attempted to make a left-hand turn onto Atlas Road, the driver of the first vehicle swerved to avoid the second and crashed into the cabinet.
The wreck was investigated by the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office, and no one was cited with any traffic infractions.
