BFHS goes strong at volleyball tourney

RATHDRUM — The Badgers made a strong showing at Saturday’s invitational meet at Lakeland High School in Rathdrum.
The volleyball invitational brought together 24 teams from throughout the region, including schools as distant as Cheney, Colville and Walla Walla.
The first order of play separated teams into eight pools of three high school each, with Bonners Ferry grouped into Pool 1 with Coeur d’Alene and Mead JV squad.
In the first round of two contests, the Badgers prevailed over the Mead team with scores of 25-22 and 25-23.
In the following match-up, the Badgers faced Coeur d’Alene for some brisk volleys and focused kills.
Despite fighting to the last point, Bonners Ferry came up just short, with Coeur d’Alene prevailing 25-22 and 25-13
Once pool play concluded, organizers matched up teams into gold, silver and bronze divisions for crossover game.
The Badgers faced off against Lewiston High School in the first round of crossover play.
The Lewiston High School volleyball team prevailed over Bonners Ferry and continued to prevail over opponents to reach the championship match of the Lakeland Invitational, only to be overcome by Mead High School’s varsity team, 21-25, 25-21, 15-6.

A federal judge recently ruled in favor of environmental advocates regarding the Canada lynx, a regional species protected under the Endangered Species Act. U.S. District Judge Dana Christensen affirmed the advocates’ contention that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service failed to fully analyze potential habitat for the wildcat, currently designated as threatened, in its native range of Idaho, Montana and Colorado.
