GOLF: Tinseth takes medalist honors at Kalispell Invite
DAVID LESNICK | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 8 years, 2 months AGO
Glacier’s McKenna Tinseth and Polson’s Carson McDaniel were not necessarily pleased with their scores on Thursday at Buffalo Hill Golf Club.
Tinseth, a senior, had hopes of carding an 85.
She settled for a 92.
“Just a lot of double bogeys,” she said.
“That was frustrating when I got them.”
McDaniel did not have a specific score he was aiming for, just a more consistent round than the 43-37—80 he finished with.
“Double-bogey, bogey, double-bogey,” he said of his final three holes on the front nine.
“I didn’t chip great today.”
He managed to put that behind him with a birdie, birdie start on the back nine. Back-to-back pars followed later, although he did finish with two bogeys.
“That was a bummer,” he said.
But all in all, those numbers were still good enough to deliver some impressive results for the duo at the 13-team Kalispell Invitational golf tournament.
Tinseth finished the 36-hole event as the medalist with her 178 total for a four-shot victory. She was second, one shot behind leader Kayla Slavik of Great Falls High, after Wednesday’s round at Northern Pines Golf Course. Tinseth shot 43-43—86 there.
Slavik shot a 97 at Buffalo Hill to tie for second along with Sara Michell of Missoula Sentinel, 89-93—182, and Becca Knutson of Flathead, 91-91—182.
McDaniel was fourth, 71-80—151, seven shots behind medalist Max Toenjes of Hamilton, 69-75—144.
Blake Hasquet, 73-76—149, and Sean Ramsbacher, 72-78—150, both of Missoula Sentinel tied for second.
Regarding team totals, for the boys it was Great Falls, 614, Missoula Sentinel, 630, and Great Falls C. M. Russell, 644, in the top three spots.
Missoula Sentinel, 776, Whitefish, 785, Glacier, 813 and Flathead, 817, went 1-2-3-4 on the girls side.
“I was OK with my score yesterday at Northern Pines,” Tinseth said. “I was just hoping to do better today.”
Mainly because she’s a Buffalo Hill member.
At Northern Pines, her driving and putting carried her along while she struggled with her iron game. It was the opposite, however, on the final day.
“My driving and putting weren’t that great,” she said.
This time it was her irons that were solid.
She did drop a 20-foot par putt on the par 4, 14th hole despite having her tee shot hit a tree and bounce all the way back to the tee box. From there, she recovered nicely.
“That kept me going,” she said.
Tinseth has had several top five finishes this fall, but this was by far her best tournament showing. It also came at the right time with state coming up later this month in Billings. She placed eighth last year at state.
“I’m hoping it will come together so I can do well at state,” she said.
“Last year I was in the high 80s and mid 90s (during the season) but shot 84 and 83 at state.
“I just wish I had another year left,” she added. “I didn’t start playing until I was a freshman. I know I would be a lot better, more consistent. I guess I’m trying to make up for all that missed time.”
McDaniel came into this event having won medalist honors at three tournaments. He’s been a consistent top five finisher every week this fall.
“It’s been pretty good (so far),” he said.
“There is always room for improvement in golf, but I’m feeling pretty good right now.”
He said playing Buffalo Hill was a challenge.
“It’s a grind-it-out golf course, a target course,” he said. “You have to hit your spots.”
Glacier had two individuals make the top 10 with Gabi Mammana, 93-95—188, placing seventh and A.J. Grande, 77-79—156, finishing ninth.
Whitefish’s Hayley Hileman, 92-93—185, was sixth and Holly Hileman, 91-98—189, ninth.
