A Marion man accused of failing to register as a sex offender is facing a federal felony charge.

Nicholas Dennis Lamere Jr., 44, pleaded not guilty to felony failure to register before U.S. Magistrate Jeremiah Lynch in Missoula on Sept. 1.

Lamere is accused of living in Flathead County from May to Aug. 22 without registering. The case was investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service.

If convicted, Lamere faces up to 10 years in prison, $250,000 in fines and lifetime supervised release.

A woman allegedly told investigators this summer that Lamere had been living on Wildebeest Lane in Marion. Lamere allegedly had been living in the home with his two young children and another young child. Detectives found that Lamere was wanted on one felony warrant for failure to register and four misdemeanor warrants.

According to court documents, Lamere was convicted in July 1994 in Michigan for felony criminal sexual conduct. Court documents state that the victim in the case was 15 years old at the time of the offense. Lamere was 22.

He historically has had problems with registering. In October 2008, he was sentenced to 360 days in jail for failure to comply with reporting requirements as a sex offender, third offense, in Marquette Circuit Court. Two other felony failure-to-register cases are pending in Michigan.

The National Sex Offender registry lists November 2014 as the last time Lamere was lawfully registered.

At that time he was registered in Michigan. He is listed as a Level 3 offender, which means he is deemed at high risk to re-offend.
