The local chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution is working to promote awareness of Constitution Week which began Sept. 17.

“There are two documents of paramount importance to American history: the Declaration of Independence, which forged our national identity, and the United States Constitution, which set forth the framework for the federal government that is still in use today,” said a press release. “While Independence Day is a beloved national holiday, fewer people know about Constitution Week, an annual commemoration of the living document that upholds and protects the freedom central to our American way of life.”

In 1956 President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a resolution dedicating Sept. 17–23 each year for the observance of Constitution Week. DAR advocates for the awareness, promotion and celebration of Constitution Week. Lt. George Farragut Chapter DAR members commemorated the anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution at its Sept. 16 meeting. Cindy Lou Schobert led a committee which set up Constitution Week displays in our local libraries.

Schobert will be giving a presentation on Constitution Week Thurday at the Hayden Library from 3:30 to 5 p.m. “This is America, Charlie Brown - The Birth of the Constitution” will be shown and discussed in the format of “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” Attendees will receive a patriotic Snoopy and friends pencil and bookmark.

Membership in Daughters of the American Revolution is open to any woman age 18 or older who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution. Lt. George Farragut Chapter meets the third Friday of the month, September through May. Anyone interested in DAR may call Jane at 457-8531 for additional details.
