An early morning accident today near the Cheney-Tyler exit west of Spokane injured two North Idaho College men's basketball coaches, one seriously.

According to Washington State Patrol reports, 29-year-old Christopher D. Kemp was life-flighted to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane with serious injuries. George S. Swanson, 46, was also injured and taken to Sacred Heart by ambulance.

NIC Athletic Director Al Williams checked on the men at Sacred Heart this morning and said the injuries are severe but not life-threatening. Williams said Kemp and Swanson are both in stable condition in the hospital's intensive care unit.

According to Washington State Patrol reports, Swanson and Kemp were among five people in a 2016 Dodge Durango driven by NIC Head Coach Corey Symons. The vehicle had struck a deer in the westbound lane of I-90, which left the disabled vehicle in the right lane. Williams told The Press the vehicle was totally destroyed.

WSP reports said a tow truck with emergency lights and flashers stopped behind Symons' vehicle, and the five men were standing on the right shoulder of I-90. That's when a westbound 2001 Jeep Cherokee driven by 23-year-old Matthew H. Seay of Deer Park, Wash., swerved to the right and struck Swanson and Kemp.

No other injuries were reported.
