Early voter registration is encouraged

Of the 69,029 Kootenai County ballots cast on Election Day of 2012, 8,114 came from voters who registered on the same trip to the polls.
This congested things, according to county elections manager Carrie Phillips.
"It took up more poll workers’ time and caused longer lines," Phillips said. "One precinct registered over 300 people. That's a lot when you already have a high turnout. It slows down the process a bit."
The League of Women's Voters, a national nonprofit, nonpartisan civic organization, wants to help make the process a little easier for the upcoming Election Day, Nov. 8.
On Sept. 27, National Voter Registration Day, the group will work with the American Association of University Women to help register voters at the Coeur d'Alene, Hayden and Post Falls public libraries throughout the day.
"For the fifth consecutive year, the League is thrilled to be part of this massive celebration of voting and democracy," the group's website says. "With so much at stake for all Americans this election year, now is the critical time for each of us to ask our friends, neighbors, coworkers and family if their voter registration is up-to-date.
Voters who have not yet registered are encouraged to do so, and registration cards are currently available at the libraries. The deadline to register is Oct, 14 at 5 p.m.
Voters can also register at IdahoVotes.com, where they can fill out a registration card that must be printed, signed and mailed to the county elections office.
"There's less paperwork in registering (before the deadline) than doing it at the polls," Phillips said. "It's not convenient for the voter, either (to register on the same day as voting)."
Those who opt to register on Election Day or at the elections office during early voter registration beginning Oct. 17, must provide a photo ID and a proof residence address of 30 days of more, typically in the form of a utility bill.
