In his quest to compile as tough a nonleague schedule as he could, Coeur d’Alene High football coach Shawn Amos went looking to play one of the top teams in western Washington.
One of his first calls was to Camas High of Vancouver, one of the top teams in 4A, Washington’s top classification.
The result is a matchup tonight at 7 at Viking Field between the Camas Papermakers (3-0), ranked No. 2 in 4A in Washington, vs. the Coeur d’Alene Vikings (3-1), ranked No. 2 in 5A in Idaho.
“They are very good,” Amos said of Camas.
So far this season, Camas has beaten Central Catholic of Portland 42-10, Sherwood (Ore.) 49-7 and, last week, Davis of Yakima 64-6.
The Papermakers have lost seven games total since the start of the 2010 season. Last year, Camas finished 11-1, losing to eventual state runner-up Skyline in the quarterfinals of the state 4A playoffs. The Papermakers reached the state title game in 2013 before dropping a one-point decision to Chiawana. Camas has not lost a regular-season game since 2011.
“Looking forward to playing one of Idaho’s premier teams,” ninth-year Camas coach Jon Eagle said. “Very impressed with what we have seen on film. Their guys play hard and physical, are very talented, have great depth and compete fearlessly. Coeur d’Alene has had a long-standing tradition of football success — we want to expose our players to the best, and this seemed like a great fit.
“Our league is small (five teams), like Coeur d’Alene’s (which has four), so we have to seek nonleague games no matter how far, or how late in the schedule.”
Tonight’s matchup is the first game of a scheduled home-and-home series.
Coeur d’Alene opened its season on the road by hanging 36 points on Folsom, one of the top teams in California, in a 55-36 loss. Last week, Sacramento High ended Folsom’s 44-game regular-season win streak with a 32-27 stunner. This week, Folsom wide receiver Drake Stallworth verbally committed to Hawaii.
Lake City (2-2) at East Valley (1-2): The teams are meeting for the fifth time ever (series tied 2-2), and the first time since 2001. East Valley’s lone win this season is a 21-20 triumph at Lakeland two weeks ago.
Post Falls (3-1) at Lakeland (2-2): Post Falls is coming off back-to-back wins over University (49-7) and Cheney (21-0). Lakeland has won both of its games by shutouts, and its two losses have been by a combined two points.
Post Falls has won seven of the last eight meetings against Lakeland, with the Hawks’ lone win during that stretch coming in 2012 at home.
Timberlake (0-4) at St. Maries (4-0): 3A Timberlake has ruled the Intermountain League for years, but is off to a winless start this season. 2A St. Maries, meanwhile, has outscored its opponents 176-30, with two shutouts. Two of those wins have come over IML teams, Kellogg (52-12) and Priest River (39-18).
The two teams haven’t met since 2011, when both were in the IML. St. Maries dropped down to 2A and the Central Idaho League the following season. St. Maries last beat Timberlake in 2000, Timberlake’s third season as a football program.
Lakeside (1-2, 1-1 White Star League) at Kootenai (2-1, 1-1): Lakeside has played the tougher schedule in league to date, losing to first-place Kendrick and beating Clark Fork. Kootenai has played the bottom two teams in the league, beating Timberline and losing to Lewis County.
