COEUR d’ALENE — The fifth annual Run for the Angels 5K Family Fun Day will be held in McEuen Park Oct. 2.
This is the signature event for the Inland Northwest SIDS Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to educating the public on safe infant sleep, bringing awareness to SIDS/SUID (sudden infant death syndrome/sudden unexplained infant death syndrome) and providing emotional support to those who have experienced the loss of a pregnancy or infant.
The event begins at noon with a kids corner that will include a jump house, face painting and other fun activities. A silent auction and registration will go from noon to 1:45 p.m. The opening ceremony and remembrance ceremony will be at 2 p.m. with the 5K (3.1 mile) run along the Centennial Trail starting at the McEuen Park gazebo at 2:30 p.m.
"This is an event for all families who have had a pregnancy, infant or child loss," said Inland Northwest SIDS Foundation executive director Liz Montgomery. "It's the one time of year that we gather together and support each other, from the brand-new families who've just lost a baby to those of us in the community whose children have been gone 30 years."
The event will feature a crib bumper drive to help rid the community of the suffocation risk to babies. The first 20 people to turn in a crib bumper will receive a new Halo SleepSack.
The run also occurs at the start of Safe Sleep Awareness month in Idaho. Montgomery said Rep. Luke Malek will read a proclamation at the start of the race, mandating all licensed childcare centers in Coeur d'Alene follow safe sleep protocol.
"It’s a time to see familiar faces, meet new families and show support to one another," Montgomery said. "Even if you're not doing the run, everyone is welcome. It's for pregnancy, infant and child loss. It's for everybody because really, we're the only support like this for our community."
Race registration is $25 and open until Friday at midnight. All proceeds will benefit education and grief programs of the Inland Northwest SIDS Foundation.
