A youth has been charged with one felony and one misdemeanor for allegedly vandalizing more than 20 cars, Bethel Baptist Church, Elrod School and Legends Stadium in Kalispell on May 31.
Cameron Newton, 15, was charged Sept. 15 in Flathead Youth Court with one felony count of theft and one misdemeanor count of criminal mischief for allegedly taking part in the crime spree.
According to court documents, Kalispell Police received reports that more than 20 vehicles had been spray painted with gray paint in the early morning hours of May 31 in the area of Forth Avenue West. Some of the vehicles had been sprayed with the message “F--- KPD.” Other vehicles had license plates painted over and “666” painted on their sides. A large green dumpster had “666” and “Hail Hitler” painted on it. At Legends Field, there were spray painted messages targeting the school resource officer and school administrators.
At Elrod School windows were broken.
The messages painted on Bethel Baptist Church’s entrance, van and its sign included “666,” “Hail Satan,” and other derogatory messages. The building’s window was broken.
A 1995 Chrysler New Yorker was also reported stolen from Fourth Avenue West. It was found later in the day near the Old Steel Bridge, and was not driveable due to damage.
According to court documents, a day after the investigation, someone contacted the school resource officer and said another juvenile suspect in the crime spree, Todd Anderson, had sent out a Snapchat video of Cameron Newton allegedly spray painting the stadium. Snapchat is a social media application that allows individuals to send out photos or videos. The videos disappear from the web 24 hours after they are posted.
Another individual told the school resource officer that Anderson allegedly had told her that he painted the church with “666” and “Hail Satan,” painted Legends Field, and stole a car near the school before it crashed in a ditch.
A third person told the officer Anderson allegedly had said he stole a car, went joy riding and ditched the vehicle.
The officer interviewed Anderson who allegedly admitted he and Newton were likely responsible for any gray graffiti spray paint in between Elrod School and Legends field. Anderson allegedly told the officer that he had watched Newton spray paint Legends Field and a church.
Anderson has not been charged in Flathead Youth Court.
“The other case is being handled informally through Youth Court Services,” prosecutor Caitlin Overland said. “He is on probation with them and he was not formally charged.”
The informal case does include a restitution element, according to Overland.
Newton is set to appear in court on Oct. 7.
