A local breast cancer patient will benefit from JN Couture Salon’s 10th Annual Cut for a Cure.

Beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, all sales proceeds and tips raised at the Hayden salon will be donated to the local breast cancer patient who will be selected in a drawing in the afternoon.

In past years, the money raised was donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, but last year, one of the salon’s own stylists, Chelsea Karlgaard, began battling the disease.

“She had to receive treatments throughout her pregnancy with her second son,” said Jill Nelmar, the salon’s owner. “She experienced many complications trough the process and also delivered her child early so they could perform the mastectomy as soon as they could.

“We were able to donate all of the funds raised last year to her. She said that it helped so much with the financial hardship that her family had to go through at that time.”

It was Karlgaard’s idea for the salon to accept nominations to determine who would benefit from this year’s event.

JN Couture’s Cut for a Cure has raised $30,000 over the years.

“I have lost loved ones to cancer and family members who also had breast cancer and lost the fight, so it hits home for me,” Nelmar said.

Nominations will be accepted until 4 p.m. today. To be eligible, the local person must be currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

The plan is to pull the name in a drawing, and call that person later to present a check.

Haircuts will be given until at least 6 p.m. at the salon, 8879 N. Hess Street.
