In April, all five bright planets are in the night sky. Mercury and Mars can be seen at dusk, Jupiter all night long, Saturn from midnight until dawn and Venus before sunrise. Another night sky observation to note is that Jupiter will be at its brightest and the closest to the Earth on April 7. With the use of binoculars, sky viewers will be able to see the planet’s four largest moons: Ganymede, Callisto, Io and Europa.

Also in April’s evening skies, a full moon will be seen on the Tues. 11, called the Pink Moon. It doesn’t particularly look pink, rather it gets its name from pink flowers, wild ground phlox, which bloom in early spring and become widespread throughout the U.S. and Canada this time of year.
