POST FALLS — Police and firefighters often come across residents in need — and now they're offering a hand up to help.

Post Falls Police and Kootenai County Fire and Rescue are partnering on a free food distribution at Post Falls City Hall, 408 N. Spokane St., from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday.

"This is the first time that we have sponsored this," Post Falls police Chief Scot Haug said. "Our officers see the need in the community and we just felt it was the right thing to do. The fire department is a great partner and we decided to offer this service jointly to the community. We plan to try to do these a few times per year."

Free produce, perishable products and other groceries will be distributed to families in need of food assistance. No appointment or documentation is needed. The event will be held regardless of the weather.

"It is a great way to support the community and help those in need," KCFR Chief Warren Merritt said. "Chief Haug and I actively look for partnerships that benefit the community. While past initiatives have been centered on our mission, this opportunity was another way to provide a service to the community."

The agencies helped sponsor the Second Harvest Mobile Food Bank, along with Center Target Sports, Numerica Credit Union and Asuris Northwest Health.

"We have funded that through private funding," Haug said. "No tax dollars will be used."

Members of KCFR, PFPD, the City of Post Falls, chamber of commerce and the sponsoring businesses will be on hand to volunteer at the event.

"What was really amazing was when the call for volunteers went out we had more help than we needed in very short order," Merritt said.

Whatever food is not distributed at the event will be given to the Post Falls Food Bank.
