COEUR d’ALENE — Show some love for Mother Earth and celebrate her gifts Saturday during the 17th annual Earth Day Fair at the Coeur d'Alene Public Library.

The theme this year is "Environmental and Climate Literacy."

Earth Day Fair coordinator Sharon Bosley wrote in a press release that the first Earth Day Fair took place in 1970. Environmental concerns weren't at the forefront at that time, but thanks to author Rachel Carson's 1962 bestseller "Silent Spring," public awareness was on the rise.

"Earth Day 1970 achieved a rare political alignment, enlisting support from Republicans and Democrats, rich and poor, city slickers and farmers, tycoons and labor leaders," Bosley wrote. "By the end of that year, the first Earth Day had led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species acts."

Now, 47 years later, Bosley wrote Earth Day is once again occurring at a challenging time for the environmental community.

"With the possible dismantling of the EPA and several other bills in the works to reduce environmental oversight, this Earth Day celebration is just as important as the first," Bosley wrote.

The Coeur d'Alene Earth Day Fair begins at noon with a 1-mile fun run. A yoga flash mob will take over at 12:30 p.m. followed by non-impact aerobics at 2 p.m. Birds of Prey demonstrations with Idaho Fish and Game education specialist Beth Paragamian will be at 1 and 3 p.m.

The free, kid-friendly fair will also include educational vendors, music, arts and crafts. The festivities go until 4 p.m.
