A 23-year-old man wanted for drug trafficking in Coeur d'Alene was arrested in Spokane Valley on Wednesday night after a three-hour standoff. He was allegedly holding an adult female victim against her will.

Zachary D. Edinger was booked in the Spokane County Jail for unlawful imprisonment, resisting arrest and two misdemeanor warrants. He is also being held on a fugitive charge for the Kootenai County felony warrant.

Deputies responded to the 13300 block of East Mission around 11 p.m. for a report that Edinger was at an apartment and was possibly armed, according to the Spokane County Sheriff's Office.

Two vehicles Edinger reportedly used were at the complex. There were lights on and movement inside the apartment.

"(Deputies) knocked on the door and a few moments later began making announcements over a patrol car’s PA system advising Edinger to exit the apartment and comply," Deputy Mark Gregory said. "They also told the female who was believed to be inside to exit and contact them, but they did not receive a reply."

With the information gathered on Edinger, who allegedly refused to exit the apartment, and with a female inside, a SWAT team was requested while deputies applied for a search warrant and continued attempts to make contact with the suspect.

Information was then received that Edinger was holding the female against her will and would not allow her to leave, according to the sheriff's office.

Residents in the neighboring apartments were evacuated.

Negotiators made phone contact with Edinger and eventually convinced him to release the female and surrender. Edinger was arrested without anyone being injured.
