RATHDRUM — The visiting Sandpoint Bulldogs tied it with three runs in the top of the seventh, then won it with three in the top of the eighth in a 7-5 victory over the Lakeland Hawks in the first game of a scheduled 4A Inland Empire League doubleheader.
There was a rain delay of some 90 minutes after two innings of the opener, and the second game was postponed due to darkness.
Kaitlan Ward hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning for Sandpoint (4-3, 1-0 4A IEL), which scored the tying run on an error.
Ward and Brooklen Steiger hit solo homers in the eighth for the Bulldogs.
Katie Kastning’s solo homer in the bottom of the sixth broke a 1-all tie for Lakeland (6-7, 3-2), and triggered a three-run inning.
“We just had some errors that cost us,” Lakeland coach Colleen Bevacqua said. “It took us a while for our bats to get hot, and they (the Bulldogs) were able to string a couple together when they needed to.”
Lakeland is scheduled to travel to Post Falls on Thursday.
Lakeland and Sandpoint are slated to meet in a doubleheader Saturday in Sandpoint.
