Law enforcement task forces on both sides of the border teamed up to locate and arrest a 28-year-old Coeur d'Alene man who is a convicted felon, had a felony probation violation warrant and was armed.
Mark T. Garnett was arrested on Friday at a residence near the 17400 block of East Third in Spokane Valley by members of the North Idaho Violent Crimes Task Force and Spokane Regional Safe Streets Task Force after more than 10 minutes of announcements.
"They received information Garnett was a substance abuser and had access to numerous pistols and an AR15-style rifle along with a significant amount of ammunition," Spokane County Sheriff's Office Deputy Mark Gregory said.
Garnett was observed arriving at the home, and according to an anonymous tip, he had been out shooting pistols at a range, Gregory said.
With safety a priority, law enforcement immediately converged on the residence to prevent Garnett from fleeing on foot or in a vehicle.
After the home was surrounded, officers called for Garnett to surrender. He then walked out and was arrested.
A warrant to search the residence for the firearms was requested and obtained. An AR-15-style rifle with laser sights and optics, along with numerous 30-round magazines and a large amount of ammunition, were seized, as well as a small amount of heroin, Gregory said.
Garnett was transported and booked into the Spokane County Jail for a fugitive from justice charge due to the felony Idaho warrant for his arrest.
Garnett's warrant was for failure to comply with conditions of release for unlawful possession of a firearm and grand theft.
This investigation continues and charges are expected. Both task forces consist of multiple agencies working to alleviate the criminal activities of gangs, violent criminals and upper-level drug traffickers.
